We’re about 75% of the way through our clinics for Summer 2014 in Guatemala… and what a summer its been! VAW has literally blanketed the country, at one point with a total of 53 volunteers in various parts of the country.
The focus of our time here is of course medical clinics in and around lake Atitlan. Thanks to the increased number of schools and volunteers visiting us this year we have been able to visit more communities in need and see more patients. Its been a tremendous year so far!
In addition to clinics most of out volunteers had some holiday time scheduled and were able to explore the beauties of Guatemala…. waterfalls, hot springs, volcanoes, mayan ruins, horse back riding and they even spotted a lion in the wild!
We still have lots to do though. Stony Brook and Middlebury are currently in Guatemala and despite lots of rain thanks to a tropical depression parked over the country we have been able to continue our clinic work. This week our group is split with two thirds of our volunteers working clinics and the other third shadowing a visiting surgeon here in San Pedro.
Excited for the arrival of UC Davis and our final clinic week of the Summer season.
